Early Years Improvement Project

Etherley Lane Nursery School is one of the Lead Schools in the Durham Teaching School Alliance. This cohort 3 teaching school alliance is growing rapidly and has strong partnerships with 60 schools of all phases from Nursery to Primary and Special to Secondary.

Alliance schools offer different types of provision from nursery schools and infant and nursery schools to primary schools with Foundation Stage Units providing places for two year olds. The expertise of early years specialists is strengtheneed by strong and effective partnerships with strategic partners including Durham Education Development Services and Northumbria University.

Schools and settings in County Durahm serve diverse communities many with significant deprivation from urban populations to isolated rural and coastal comunities. By working closely with the Local Authority the teaching school alliance has identified schools and settings which will benefit from the support that can offered by specialists working collaboratively from a range of settings and from differnt disciplines.

The Early Years Improvement Project will focus on a number of areas to improve the quality of provision including:

  • Offering intensive setting to setting support
  • Delivering funded CPD to managers and staff in leadership roles
  • Delivering CPD as twilights to a wide range of early years practitioners
  • Engagng in original and innovative projects which will be used as case studies of new and effective practice
  • Organising network meetings
  • Organising a setting to setting visits programme.
